Velaluka s carnival

In Vela Luka there is a long, rich tradition of carnival. The Carnival period is from the feast of the Three Kings (6th January) until Ash Wednesday (just before Easter during the last few years, the carnival also takes place during the summer season.

On the 1st Thursday of August, in conjunction with the fishermen’s evening there is much excitement as the population dresses in their fancy-dress and party till dawn.

There are many traditions tied to Carnival period, such as burning of “Krnovalica” in February (all misfortunes of the town are blamed on “Krnoval” etc.) There is also a children’s Carnival, for primary school children. All arrangements for the Carnival are made by the committee Trtajun, which was founded in 1996. and they ensure that all traditions are followed.. 

Even though you can buy wonderful fancy-dress costumes and masks, most locals prefer to make their own.
