The soutern Adriatic island of Korčula has been known since Ancient Greek times for its beauty and pleasant climate.

Mud has been settled and radioactive water has been welling up in the bottom of the Vela Lukas inlet over the millennia and their curative properties were first recognised long ago. They have been used medicinally for more than a hundred years, primarily to treat rheumatic complaints. This gift of nature prompted people to consider putting them to use in a more organised and more effective way and hence a modern health resort was built.
