Vela Spila-Big Cave

Vela Spila is situated  on the hill above the bay. It was first recorded in the official document in 1214. Then it was mentioned in the book “History of Vela Luka’’ written by Nikola Ostojic in 1853.The first excavations were contacted by Marinko Givoje in 1950. and in 1974. organized excavation work started and it is still  on going.

Although the cave is only partly explored it is known that the island was inhabited since the Stone Age, 18 000 BC. And it was a busy manufacturing and trading community.
Some of most interesting findings are those from early Stone Age, with a unique collection of ceramics called “Vela Luka collection”.
For its exceptional acoustic properties the Cave is occasionally used as a concert hall.

You can come to the cave by car or you can walk from the bay. Don’t forget to take your camera with you as the view from the top of the hill is unforgettable.
